375 [06:54:34] <bejelentkezni> Hi. I'm trying to install
Debian on a mid-2011 macbook air to extend its useful life. Now I
don't have an ethernet dongle and macbooks don't have
ethernet ports, so the installation must be done over wifi. the wifi
situation is being a real pain, the chip is a
376 [06:54:35] <bejelentkezni> bcm43224 the drivers for which are
blobs that must be run at userspace. not a huge deal, just means
that I can only use wifi from a live desktop environment, no cheeky
firmware package sideloading allowed. problem is I really like using
the advanced installer since it makes a few small things like
remembering to add the main user to the wheel group and setting up
an ssh server and whatnot a cinch. Is there any way to run
377 [06:54:35] <bejelentkezni> the advanced installer (graphical
or text mode) from any of the live nonfree ISOs? I can't find
anything in the manual or Google or from just checking several ISOs
for the past hour or so. Ultimately just using the default installer
and doing the rest manually would probably have saved me time by now
but now I just gotta know. Can the advanced installer be run from
the live userspace?

690 [14:00:56] <MaxFrames> I have a debian buster virtual machine
that hasn't been updated in a while. this machine's
critical (particularly, it runs an openvpn server that is critical).
should I "apt-get upgrade" or should I "apt-get
dist-upgrade"?
691 [14:01:33] <MaxFrames> it is important to patch it as there
are multiple security patches available, but at the same time I need
to not break openvpn and in general not break stuff
692 [14:01:34] <apollo13> can't be that critical if it is
just one machine
693 [14:01:45] <MaxFrames> critical to me at least...
694 [14:01:45] <apollo13> then you should work on a failover
concept
695 [14:02:12] <apollo13> well you need to reboot at
least… and if that breaks be prepared to fix it

rebooted for a while that funny stuff happens :D

isn't much to worry then
701 [14:03:29] <apollo13> in the worst case you'll have to
reinstall it
702 [14:03:33] <apollo13> but probably not coming to that
703 [14:03:36] <jelly-home> in general things aren't
supposed to break with security and point release patches, but
sometimes there are regressions

707 [14:04:04] <MaxFrames> question: full-upgrade or
dist-upgrade?
708 [14:04:17] <apollo13> I wouldn't know what the diff is
709 [14:04:24] <jelly-home> if it's a VM and you have remote
console access (that doesn't go over that same openvpn :-) then
you're safe to patch it remotely
710 [14:04:49] <jelly-home> !full-upgrade
711 [14:04:49] <dpkg> full-upgrade is the new name for
"dist-upgrade" in aptitude from Lenny onwards. Remember
that "dist-upgrade" is not about moving from one release
to another but installing new packages (ask me about
<dist-upgrade>); read man apt-get carefully. Some security
fixes will require a "full-upgrade" not just a
"safe-upgrade" to apply. Ask me about <why not dist
upgrade> <dist-upgrade> <safe-upgrade>
<apt-listchanges>
712 [14:05:27] <jelly-home> and if it's a VM you can
probably take a snapsnot and revert to that if everything breaks
713 [14:05:30] <MaxFrames> ok
714 [14:05:55] <jelly-home> at work, we always take snapshots
before patching
715 [14:06:37] <MaxFrames> other question: I usually used
apt-get; should I use aptitude instead? and can I use one when
I've used the other one in the past? or do I need to stick to
what I used before?
716 [14:06:58] <MaxFrames> I *think* I've patched this
machine in the past using apt-get
717 [14:07:14] <apollo13> jelly-home: wise choice, though I am
working on simply replacing machines instead of updating.
718 [14:07:42] <MaxFrames> the reason it's so behind with
patches is that I thought I had set upp unattended-upgrades, but
apparently I didn't (I just checked and it seems to be
unconfigured)
719 [14:08:01] <apollo13> personally I think unattented-upgrades
are very dangerous
720 [14:08:27] <MaxFrames> or at least I have nothing in
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/20auto-upgrades
721 [14:08:38] <jelly-home> MaxFrames, it doesn't really
matter whether you use apt, apt-get or aptitude for patching up, the
differences in behaviour are subtle
722 [14:09:03] <MaxFrames> so I can't bork stuff if I use a
mix of the two over time?
723 [14:09:18] <jelly-home> if unsure, use apt for interactive
stuff, or whatever you're most comfrotable with
724 [14:09:29] <MaxFrames> apt-get then
725 [14:09:30] <jelly-home> correct, no borkage
726 [14:09:54] <jelly-home> but apt has a PROGRESS BAR :-D
727 [14:10:07] <MaxFrames> wow :D
728 [14:10:51] <MaxFrames> being a windowshead, I always need
some reacquanting when I need to touch the few debian stuff I have
