any safe way. It's because back in the days when we install
Win95, we can overwrite the installed system
1810 [23:12:49] <zumba_addict> i'll back it up then. Thank
you
1811 [23:13:00] <usney> yes you can overwrite the installed system
1812 [23:13:10] <usney> but that would also overwrite your data
1813 [23:13:18] <usney> so that is why you need to back it up

for the usb installer. I was brought here -

1817 [23:14:25] <zumba_addict> I got that link from here -

1818 [23:14:38] <usney> just get the iso image

a dvd ddrive
1823 [23:15:23] <usney> make sure to backup any data on the usb
stick if there is any
1824 [23:15:40] <zumba_addict> oh
1825 [23:15:48] <hypn0> you don't need a dvd drive?
1826 [23:15:49] <zumba_addict> i remember dvd drives are only 4gb
:D
1827 [23:15:52] <usney> the iso image is for dvd/cd also but can
be flash to a usb drive
1828 [23:15:58] <zumba_addict> cool
1829 [23:16:07] <zumba_addict> i forgot dvd iso images are only
4gb
1830 [23:16:21] <zumba_addict> not sure why I was thinking 640Gb
:D
1831 [23:16:38] <usney> it can go up to that but usually debian
iso image files are at 1.8 gb
1832 [23:16:40] <zumba_addict> cool, I'll download Strech
1833 [23:16:49] <zumba_addict> thanks much

to a usb stick

1856 [23:31:33] <Gerowen> I've found that "cp" ing
an image to a usb stick works a lot of the time as well without
overwriting the disk's sector count and whatnot as well. cp
imagefile /dev/foo
1857 [23:31:45] <zumba_addict> i'll try that. I always use
cli. The block size sometimes have to be correct though

1859 [23:32:02] <Gerowen> I tried it because I noticed that
"dd" basically made the thumb stick look like a physical
version of that ISO file right down to the capacity if you plugged
it into a Windows box, and cp didn't affect it that way.
1860 [23:32:12] <zumba_addict> i think cp'ing is not enough
since it has to also adjust the boot sector
1861 [23:32:38] <Gerowen> zumba_addict: Always worked for me, just
don't append a partition to the /dev/foo when cping it. I
won't promise anything, but that's what I've done for
ages.
