repositories, mix multiple releases of Debian, or mix Debian and
derived distributions, you have a mess. There's no way anyone
can support this "distribution of Frankenstein" and
#debian certainly doesn't want to even try. Ask me about
<reinstall>
433 [07:00:46] <serafeim> oh yes that's understandable; the
same is true for rhel; you don't go from rhel 6 to rhel 7
434 [07:00:47] <n4dir> ah, that
435 [07:01:12] <n4dir> serafeim: ah, ok then. Just wanted to
stress it, as there are some weird how-to's out in the wild
436 [07:01:33] <serafeim> n4dir: well i try to avoid such thigns
for server use
437 [07:01:44] <n4dir> well: you can go from say stable to
testing, if that is what you want. But you don't mix them
438 [07:01:54] <serafeim> however i have read that there *is* a
way to upgrade from one major to the next (i.e from debian 10 to
debian 11)
439 [07:01:56] <n4dir> yeah, all good. stable is the way to go
440 [07:02:02] *** Joins: Ericounet (~Eric@replaced-ip )
441 [07:02:19] <n4dir> upgrades from one release to the other
usually work fine (from experience or what i hear)
442 [07:02:29] <n4dir> so from stable 10 to stable 11
443 [07:02:40] <n4dir> but that you can ask then.
444 [07:02:47] <serafeim> cool i'll keep that in mind when
it is needed
445 [07:02:54] <n4dir> and people more smart than i am :-)
446 [07:03:09] <serafeim> excellent thank you for the help
i'll stick around in case i need any more help in the future
447 [07:03:15] <n4dir> right now it is late in the US and early
in Europe, so the channel is not that active
448 [07:03:31] <n4dir> serafeim: good good. Have fun, good luck
and all.
449 [07:03:33] <serafeim> yes i'm from greece and it's
8 in the morning right here
450 [07:03:43] <serafeim> n4dir: thank you and happy holidays

1750 [23:48:29] <ljkimz> Configuring LDAP with libnss-ldap. Found
that /etc/ldap.conf needs to be '644' (which exposes
connection password to world) so that NSS can access it. Using nscd
resolves this issue. There is also 'nslcd'. Why would I
use either nscd or nslcd over the other for this purpose?

1759 [23:52:10] <ljkimz> mutante -- not sure what you are getting
at. Is there a single user that nss uses to execute name resolution
operations?

1762 [23:54:05] <mutante> ljkimz: just getting at "usually if
something needs to be readable by another user you either use the
same user or put users in the same group rather than having to make
things world-readable". That being said I don't know about
nss in specifics.

1764 [23:55:13] <ljkimz> Well, no 'normal' user should
be able to read a password from any file like ldap.conf. The system
should provide a utility (like nscd) to access the file, perform
operations and return a result.

1766 [23:55:58] <mutante> ljkimz: That sounds like you are
argueing against using 644 though
1767 [23:56:02] <ljkimz> So any combination of permissions on
ldap.conf is not a good solution. It should only be accessible by
root or accounts intended for that purpose.

1770 [23:56:12] <ljkimz> Yes
1771 [23:56:36] <ljkimz> But mainly in the sense that it allows
normal users to read the file.
1772 [23:57:34] <mutante> Yea, so.. you can't use an account
intended for that purpose?

1777 [23:59:10] <ljkimz> I don't think so. It seems to be the
inherent way that nss works. I don't know of a way to specify a
dedicated user for accessing the file and executing ldap queries.
That's one of the reasons behind nscd and nslcd (to allow root
or another user to perform these operations and only give users
access to the result, not the operations)
1778 [23:59:38] <ljkimz> So, I KNOW that 644 is bad. The question
is really why choose nslcd over nscd or vice-versa.
