remove some gnome stuff without nuking the entire thing using
apt-get autoremove
458 [04:11:10] <annadane> gnome "stuff"
459 [04:11:21] <annadane> i'm actually not sure what the
best method is
460 [04:11:36] <annadane> i'd think it depends on how it was
installed, like tasksel or one of the smaller packages
461 [04:11:52] <pclover> yeah my idea to reduce the size but
retain a usable gnome install
462 [04:11:58] <pclover> and not nuke the entire thing using
autoremove

476 [04:14:18] <annadane> it sort of depends what you want
removed, you can look at what got installed in your apt history, apt
show the packages to see what they do, and apt remove them
selectively
477 [04:14:29] <nemo> pclover: ah. if it's just for a
compact VM why not use absolutely any other desktop environment?
478 [04:14:36] <nemo> for one thing gnome3 and kde burn a ton of
RAM
479 [04:14:42] <nemo> aaand require graphics acceleration to boot
480 [04:14:54] <pclover> maybe that's a better idea
481 [04:14:58] <annadane> sometimes when you remove things it
threatens to remove a lot, not just autoremove, with gnome, i'm
not sure though, you'd probably have to trial and error it

complex. if you don't want the whole gnome DE don't
install 'gnome' or 'task-gnome'desktop',
install gnome-core and so and build your own gnome

the debian wiki page on gnome probably covers it
