695 [06:15:11] <sponix> somiaj: MX is weird in that way. Aside
from SysV init, and having its own additional MX repo added on, it
does all of its stuff straight from debian.org repos
696 [06:16:19] <sponix> I just had to manually add 5.4.0-4,
reboot into that, remove the -3, and tell it to re-install zfs 0.8.3
from the Backports - to get things the way I wanted

698 [06:17:21] <sponix> hmm
699 [06:18:16] <somiaj> It is still not debian, and sometiems
those little differences can make things not work as expected,
anyways, I would suggest using apt-cache to search through the repos
you have vs the debian bots for MX

1555 [16:24:40] <krumelmonster> Hi everyone. I'm system
administrator in small nonprofit. They've been asking about
being able to access their data from at home but there was more
important work to do (like updating to a supported debian version)
and they can't really couldn't afford the hours it'd
take them. So currently they only work at the workstations in the
office, some use the pretty unreliable samba server to work on their
own devices in office.
1556 [16:24:51] <krumelmonster> Because of corona, I'd like
to set up some way for them to work from home from monday on but as
I'm not really a qualified sysadmin (but a computer science
student) I could *really* use some advice on how to do this.
1557 [16:25:04] *** Quits: slack_ (~slack@replaced-ip ) (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
1558 [16:25:05] <krumelmonster> There already is a working OpenVPN
setup and a somewhat working Samba setup and one idea was to get DNS
service discovery working and then allow Samba through the OpenVPN.
Other ideas were to use owncloud or sftp. Top priority is getting
this to on monday but it should also be easy to use and set up and
ideally to prevent editing conflicts by locking (at least for
libreoffice).
1559 [16:26:01] <krumelmonster> *getting this work until monday.
1560 [16:28:32] <jelly> make sure you have a vpn working; samba
can run over that but needs reliable, low latency network to work
well

1564 [16:33:24] <krumelmonster> The VPN is top notch but runs on
TUN (as supposed to, I assume?) and I'd therefore have to get
the Samba DNS to work. The clients in office are all Linux but
peoples machines at home are probably mainly windows. There seemed
to have been general issues figuring out a Samba configuration that
works with Windows 10. Latency will be around 50ms. Do you have
experience with Samba through OpenVPN and is this a recommendation?
1565 [16:35:42] <jelly> it's not a recommendation, just
general info about samba (well, about SMB protocol)
1566 [16:37:30] <jelly> as for dns, you probably just need to
provide access to the same dns servers over vpn that are used on
premises
1567 [16:38:58] <jelly> "runs on TUN" is most VPN
services on linux, only the very new wireguard (and ipsec?) have
some sort of kernel support

it wouldn't interfere with the dnsmasq would have been
nontrivial (own devices where very low priority until now).
I'll stick around for a while and hope for a recommendation on
what setup to use; From how it's been now and after reading
into Samba DNS a bit, Setting up Samba probably would be a lot of
work and I'd have to figure
