1353 [19:52:10] <somiaj> yea, this has caused a lot of confusion,
and some people manually change the /usr/bin/python link and break
their whole system. In short debian had too many python2 packages
using /usr/bin/python, so they had to stick with this to ensure no
breakage. Though now that python2 is being removed, the link being
dead is probably best to avoid any future confusion

1769 [23:27:35] <alexrelis[m]> I remember the expert had some
option where you could choose which kernel you wanted to install,
but idk if it's still there. I haven't had to install
Debian in a long time.
1770 [23:27:53] <nvz> you dont need anything extra or special if
they just keep making the testing installer able to install stable
easily
1771 [23:28:04] <nvz> which at one point in time, when I tested
it, it had done
1772 [23:28:21] <ElDiabolo> Are there any alternatives to quilt
when doing debuild patch management?
1773 [23:28:23] <nvz> if you used expert mode when you went to
setup repos, it would ask you if you wanted stable, testing,
unstable
1774 [23:28:38] <nvz> but since it was a testing installer, it had
the newer kernel running already

too new for the kernel (even using the text installer), there is no
way the kernel on the installer is going to help install anyways.

help Debian is an easier installer.

1785 [23:32:54] <ElDiabolo> Reason is that #749069 (quilt

that quilt also can not do patches for the deletion of hidden files.
So looking for alternatives seems reasonable.

1787 [23:33:06] <alexrelis[m]> kingsley: I feel like Debian is the
kind of distro that once you set things up, you are good to go and
don't need to do much else. But earlier I was talking about how
if a user who had new hardware was trying to install Debian Stable,
they will most likely encounter a CLI session post-install.
1788 [23:34:06] <alexrelis[m]> Maybe Debian shouldn't make a
netinstaller for different update channels. Maybe the netinstaller
should just be based off of Sid and you can opt to install either
stable, testing, or unstable.

1794 [23:36:03] <somiaj> It really depends on the hardware, but

I also remember having trouble installing a GUI desk top. The

1808 [23:42:17] <kingsley> alexrelis[m]: On a related note, I
settled into using a Franken Debian box. It's a mix of used

it stops booting maybe once about every 5 years, which I seem to
recall was fixed by upgrading all packages to their latest versions
in unstable.
