rather arbitrarily skip a release and install random buster packages
in jessie. Doing an "upgrade" from one branch to the next
even if they're back to back isn't a good idea.. you need
a dist-upgrade for that because it will allow the package manager
more room to resolve issues that arise during a branch upgrade. Now
you're not likely running any debian release, but
47 [00:34:33] <rant> some hybrid of jessie/buster that nobody
can support.. best case scenario you may be able to complete
migration to buster and no longer be elegible for support here..
otherwise you need to go reinstall your system with jessie or

679 [07:29:07] <alkisg> g105b_: gparted calls resize2fs, which
relocates blocks if needed, so you don't have to worry about
any of this
680 [07:29:24] <g105b_> That is just brilliant. Thanks guys.
681 [07:29:31] <alkisg> np
682 [07:30:02] <cheapie> You may also want to look into e2image
if you're imaging a drive. I think it's smart enough to
only copy used areas, but you do have to give it some options to
make it work right, so RTFM :P
683 [07:30:03] <darxmurf> g105b_: there is also a gparted live CD
if you want to do that offline
684 [07:30:19] <cheapie> gparted uses e2image if you tell it to
copy an ext* partition, I think.
685 [07:30:24] <g105b_> Gparted works on Windows and Mac too
doesn't it?
686 [07:30:42] <cheapie> Linux-only AFAIK.

CD you can use.
690 [07:31:10] <alkisg> partimage is also great to back up
partitions
691 [07:31:40] <kopper> g105b_: If you need to use it on Win
machine, you could use live distro on USB.
692 [07:31:47] <darxmurf> if you want to resize stuff using a
free windows software, you can have a look on Paragon Partition
Manager free
693 [07:31:59] <darxmurf> but I would use a live Gparted

booting failed: somehow there is a timeout in initramfs scripts to
have the root filesystem available (30s). Once over, it goes in
panic mode and you cannot boot anymore. Since I need more than 30s
to login+unlock the device, it always fell into panic mode. I think
this timeout appeared during an initramfs upgrade at some point and
it was overlooked...

projects exist for debian based systems.
2010 [21:21:34] <DanteD> I've been using debian on desktops
and now I'm trying Debian on a server, but it didn't start
good. The first service I tried installing (inadyn) fails to start
with the init script but works fine when I run it from command line.
All my attemps to debug the init script failure have failed. It just
says start(exited) and inadyn failed! with 'systemctl status
inadyn'. Any ideas?

2230 [23:39:11] <talin> hello. i followed the instructions at
debian.org to upgrade to buster. basically changed from stretch to
buster in sources.list and ran apt update && apt upgrade
&& apt-get dist-upgrade. it seems to work fairly well, but
there are some packages that i can't find when i search with
apt search... anything else i should do?
2231 [23:40:16] <TomTomTosch> phantomcircuit: try adding
console=ttyS0 to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub, then run
update-grub. i can't remember if i did that or enable the
systemd getty service or both to get it to work for me.
2232 [23:40:45] <phantomcircuit> TomTomTosch, i did that, which is
why i can see the kernel booting
2233 [23:41:04] <phantomcircuit> but when it loads the initial
ramdisk it appears to ignore that
2234 [23:41:36] <annadane> talin, well, which packages

2240 [23:44:33] <talin> huh? that's strange, someone here
yesterday told me it's there
2241 [23:45:02] <annadane> there's python-kivy and
